December Daily: dwarvish things

Hm. Tolkein's dwarves were known for being warlike and courageous, skillful with their hands, and patient. So if by things you mean traits, I'm pretty much the opposite of a dwarf.

I own, however, quite a lot of earrings bought from Etsy, a kilt pin that looks like it was hand-hammered, and lots of pottery bowls and vessels, mostly very small; a lot of them wouldn't look out of place in a scene of a dinner among the dwarves.

My most recently purchased piece of pottery (which I bought last year at Wiscon) is one of those in-between colors I love the most, a sort of cool greenish gray. It's a bowl about the size of a cupped hand, except deeper, and the inside is done in a different glaze, coppery. Around the bottom part of the outside of the bowl -- the part where it's flaring out, but not where it's flaring back in -- it has a texture on it, as if it had been rolled over something bumpy. Maybe that's sort of dwarvish? Today I ate cashew nuts out of it.

Aren't they great? Mom has a white one shaped like a sort of elongated football that I'm always tempted to steal from her.
