That is hilarious and I had no idea! My (Appalachian) paternal grandmother always called them PEE-cans (she also warshed the dishes and only liked feesh when it was batter-fried), but I don't remember her ever referring to the ice cream. She made an incredible PEE-can pie, btw. That woman's pies were legendary.
