Yesterday the kidlet was begging me for a kitten. (Actually the kidlet was begging me for two kittens, plus another grown cat, but we won't address that.)

I said what I always say about cats: "First, I don't know how well our poor humble kitty would adapt to having another feline in the house. Second, I refuse to have a cat declawed, and I'd be worried about damage to the furniture and/or carpet. And finally, we don't have to go out looking for a cat. When the universe wants us to have a cat, the universe will provide one."

Today, the manager of my coffee shop is trying to get rid of a litter of kittens.

So what do you think?

There's a great alternative to declawing in claw caps (http://www.softpaws.com/), which seem to be all the rage. They're painless for the kitties and for the furniture, too.

What part of the country do you live in again? I'm somewhat in the market for a new kitten myself...

*snicker*

Yeah, I'd say that was a pretty clear sign from the universe...

How old is the kidlet? Below about 4 I would say no kitten, but 4 and up, can probably handle it gently enough.

If you have a cat at home, just get one. But cats are cute with a playmate, so get two if you want. But!! Be sure to only get female cats. With male cats, you have to worry about them marking their terratory (which they may or may not do after they've been nutered anyway).

as far as saving furniture- you can trim a cat's nails with nail clippers just the same as you can people's. just avoid the pink fleshy part. =P then they don't have anything to tare up furniture with

I second that, but it can take a lot of patience. The way *not* to do it is to grab the cat and try to hold it down – but if you already have a cat, I suppose you know how they feel about being held down. Do it while it's resting. Maybe it'll just allow one paw, but that's okay, you can do the other three later.

I think one new kitty at a time is the way to go if you already have one, but I'm all in favour of getting one. Could be my own abstinence speaking, though. My own cat lives with my parents since I'm not allowed to have pets where I live, and I really miss him sometimes.

Delurking to add that my sister uses Softpaws on her two cats and swears by them. She has brand-new couches, and says that with these the cats haven't done any damage to them at all. (Plus the coloured ones make them look like they've had little kitty manicures--they're really cute!)

Kittens pee on things. I was traumatised by sitting down on a beanbag and finding a little warm patch. Get a half-grown kitten if you have to: it'll probably have spent more time with it's mother, and will therefore be more emotionally stable, plus it'll be toilet trained.

two of them will paly with each other and give your older cat a break.

Or at least that's the theory.

It's actually quite easy to teach a kittie to tolerate claw-trimming. You just have to start early enough. My previous pair of kitties were so well trained they'd let me trim their claws, and even give them baths. The current monster, OTOH, won't even let me pick him up - which is why I'm in the market for another.

Really? Wow. I've raised 4 kittens from about 6 weeks up, and never had to do more than plop them in the litter box at some point to get them potty trained. Now, my older cat had issues, but that was age.

I grew up with a lot of cats. We had kittens all the time, and while most of them managed not too badly, you always got one in every litter who couldn't find the litter tray if it's life depended on it.

I've got two cats at the moment and they refuse to use the same litter tray. I have to have one in the porch and one in the bathroom, and God help me if I forget to empty them every day.

Oh, mine is fine with claw-trimming, as long as I quit when he wants me to quit. He's a terribly spoiled boy altogether, only doing things for as long as he thinks it's fun.

I've never tried bathing him and suspect he wouldn't like it - but then, he does enjoy splashing around with water, so you never know.

We accidentally discovered the secret to getting our cats to use the scratching post rather than the furniture -- when we were in the middle of waiting for some more furniture to arrive, the scratching post ended up next to the TV set in the living room...

THE CATS THOUGHT WE WERE LOOKING AT THEM!

Ever since, we've put the scratching posts in a prominent place in the room where it can be seen, or is right next to a major feline thoroughfare.

Also, if we catch them in the act of scratching, we try to offer verbal praise AND a yummy cat treat (only one).

Draping afghans over the ends of the couch arms didn't hurt either....

I once read that getting two kittens was no more trouble and much more fun than just one. In my experience, that's true. I think the main question in the two vs. one argument is whether you want to/can afford to double the expense. If that's not an issue, I'd go for two. Since they're from the same litter, they're already going to be friends, and can comfort and entertain one another while your adult cat adjusts to your treacherous betrayal the new additions.

Depends on how much you love your current cat and how old it is. One of my friends keeps trying to tempt us with kittens, but our two remaining cats are both 16 and the kitten of my heart is rather fragile. I'd hate to see them traumatized by kittens.

Absolutely one must have two kittens! More fun, less trouble, and then they can chew on each other instead of Mom.

Two or none... from my own experience. Some time back I had an older cat (15) and adopted one kitten. He drove her nuts. Took him to be fixed; he died from anaesthesia, I don't know how people survive losing their children... but when we went to get another kitten to fill the hole in the house, there were a pair in the shelter, both black, too tiny to stand up to the other kittens at the food dish. We couldn't leave one.

They investigated the old girl a few times, got hissed at, and proceeded to amuse one another. Same thing happened in my recently blended household (my young male cat, my partner's 2 old ladies). He drove them to distraction until we rescued a flea-ridden baby at the library, and now the two younger cats are inseparable. They tend not to gang up on the older girls; I guess it's more fun to wrassle... tho you can't really generalize about cats, they'll contradict you out of sheer pussedness.

GOOD LUCK!

A lot of the cat rescues around here only adopt kittens in pairs for just that reason. And so that they can entertain each other and stay out of trouble when you're gone for the day.

You can have beanbag chairs or cats. Not both. Every cat I've ever met thinks beanbags are vinyl-covered litter-boxes,and given the texture of the filler I kind of understand why.

A box-trained cat who starts peeing inappropriately may have cystitis...

I did that with the treats, and now Scary and I have many exchanges every day like this:

Her: *goes and sits on or near scratching post and looks up expectantly*
Me: That's not good enough.
Her: *reaches out with one paw-- with claws retracted-- and desultorily swipes the scratching post*
Me: Still not good enough.
Her: *rolls her eyes* *extends claws and scratches once or twice* *looks up at me with an expression of complete exasperation*
Me: Okay, okay. Here. *tosses a treat*
Her: *eats treat* *wanders off for four seconds* *comes back and sits by scratching post again.*

Repeat, ad nauseam.

Aww. They're so cute! We'll definitely have to try these, if we go for it.

We got the current cat as an adult, and her former humans had her declawed -- and much as I disapprove, I have to admit it's lovely to have both a cat and an intact couch!

She's 5 and a half. She tries hard to be gentle, though I suspect that the current cat sometimes views her love as something of a trial. ("I'm teaching Kitty to sit up like a human!")

Laughing so hard at both of these stories.

Our former cat used her scratching post very nicely every single day. But she used the couch, the carpet, and the welcome mat every single day, too.

She's only about five, so she's not at all feeble. I'd be more worried about her being neglected (by us) or worried to death (by the kittens).

On the other hand, I think she'd probably like to have some other creatures around the house to take up some of the kidlet's rather strenuous attentions!
