Feeling wildly creative today, though unfortunately not in a literary sense. I did, however, make the black bean soup from this month's Cook's Illustrated, which is a work of art, not exaggerating one bit.

Then I Photoshopped up all the pages for a calendar of the kidlet's artwork to give the grandparents. Now I'm faced with the difficulty of printing said pages, double-sided and with the right art on the backs of the right pages and facing in the right direction, which for someone with my spatial disabilities is a project not unlike building the Eiffel Tower out of toothpicks; I expect to waste a lot of paper.

Meanwhile, since it's yet another post with no fiction content whatsoever, why not do the song lyrics meme?

Here's how it works.

1. Throw your playlist on shuffle.
2. Pick a line out of the first 20-30 songs with words to pop up (no matter how embarrassing or obscure.) Be sure to write down where they all came from somewhere, so you don't forget.
3. Toss the lines out to your flist, and time wasting fun is had by all!

Some of these are so obvious they're hardly even worth typing, and others are so obscure that I'll be surprised if anyone gets them.

Wow, I'm surprised I recognized things, considering my very limited music collection. Here are my guesses:

#6: "Penny Lane", the Beatles
#21: "Gasoline", Jann Arden
#24: "Cecilia", Simon and Garfunkle
#25: "Walking in Memphis" (I figured it out before reading <lj user="anteco"'s comment, honest!) Time-wasting fun indeed.

1. Is that from Porgy and Bess? I could sing the tune for you, but I'm not sure of the name of the song. A blues tune.

34. This is a Simon and Garfunkel tune too, isn't it (with Simon singing....)

And #18 is going to drive me bugfuck, because I *know* it, I just can't place it, or quite recover the tune. Something by the Beatles, right? Gnarrr. I'm going to have to go Google it, before I go nuts.

1 is Summertime from Porgy and Bess - maybe the Janis Joplin cover. There are plenty of possibilities for artist on this one.

30 is from the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack, Didn't Leave Nobody But the Baby - I'm not sure who sings it though.

One of these days you're gonna rise up singing.

I'd guess "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess, but either I'm wrong or the lyric is "one of these mornings, you're gonna rise up singing."

I want a place to call my own where you have never been.

Um, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, "Rhythm of the Blues."

She say, 'Every stone a story, like a rosary.'

Joan Osborne, "St. Teresa." I remember you and I stepping into the same thread at Table Talk to defend Joan Osborne to people who only knew her from "One of Us."

Then I Photoshopped up all the pages for a calendar of the kidlet's artwork to give the grandparents.

Now, there's an excellent idea!!! The grandparents have been whining for years for a kidlet calendar, they want a calendar with seasonal pictures of the girls but since we don't have any, we haven't done it. But ARTWORK! Yes! That we have, piles and piles! Now I must find a blanco wall calendar, ick, it might be too late for it now :(

Printing it turned out to be a big pain in the neck. Next year I'm going to do what I've always done up to now -- take a pile of artwork down to the printshop in early November and let them do the heavy lifting. But it's an easy, cheap gift if you've got artistic kids.

(If you do it via printshop, call around and get quotes -- the prices vary amazingly.)

All I've got is the cover, by Suzy Bogguss, but, yeah, same song.

Weirdest thing -- when Suzy's version was getting a lot of play on country radio, I loved the song but could not shake the conviction that it had been written for a woman. There was just something in the lyrics, which I can't define, that made me say, "The 'you' in this song couldn't possibly be a man."

Learning that the song had been written by a guy cleared up a lot!

(I have this conviction about a lot of songs -- Joan Jett's "Little Liar," for instance, and Sixpence None The Richer's "Kiss Me," and Merrill Bainbridge's "Mouth" and "Under the Water" -- but usually I can find something in the lyrics to support it. There really wasn't anything obvious in "Drive South.")
