This is from G.K. Chesterton, and for some reason it makes me think of James Potter and his friends:

"The more sincere and passionate and even headstrong a lad is the more certain he is to be conventional. The bolder and freer he seems the more the traditions of the college or the rules of the club will hold him with their gyves of gossamer; and the less afraid he is of his enemies, the more cravenly he will be afraid of his friends."

Oh, *bingo*. Citation, please?

And while we're at it, what's your icon about?

The quote is from Chesterton's book Charles Dickens.

And the icon -- [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn once cast the Harry Potter characters as adults, and she found that photo of Johnny Depp to be an adult Harry. I added the scar.

What Dickens book is he talking about? Which hero?

About David in David Copperfield, I believe -- I wrote down the quote and don't have the book in front of me.

With Chesterton, there's also always that thing where he starts out talking about David Copperfield, but within a couple of sentences he is, or thinks he is, talking about All Humanity.

I thought it was probably Copperfield -- David is a very conventional boy. I never really got over my urge to kick him.

Nail and hammer time!

Interesting -- I don't think of Snape as having friends. Though obviously there was some influence powerful enough to send him off to the Death Eaters.
