This is from G.K. Chesterton, and for some reason it makes me think of James Potter and his friends:

"The more sincere and passionate and even headstrong a lad is the more certain he is to be conventional. The bolder and freer he seems the more the traditions of the college or the rules of the club will hold him with their gyves of gossamer; and the less afraid he is of his enemies, the more cravenly he will be afraid of his friends."

About David in David Copperfield, I believe -- I wrote down the quote and don't have the book in front of me.

With Chesterton, there's also always that thing where he starts out talking about David Copperfield, but within a couple of sentences he is, or thinks he is, talking about All Humanity.

Interesting -- I don't think of Snape as having friends. Though obviously there was some influence powerful enough to send him off to the Death Eaters.
