I rented "The Breakfast Club" and watched it -- first movie I've rented in ages, and it was good to see that Molly Ringwald really was as pretty as I remembered, and that, yes, there actually was a time when Emilio Estevez was good-looking and Judd Nelson, while not good-looking, was hot.

Now I want speculation and Benderslash. (Yes, I've enjoyed [livejournal.com profile] kaneko's The Supper Club and [livejournal.com profile] shrift's A Lobotomy and Some Tights.)

1. What's y'all's guess as to how old these kids are? The actors are all older than they ought to be, which confuses matters, but clearly they're not seniors. I'm wondering if they might even be sophomores -- I mean, what on earth would prevent Bender from dropping out the very microsecond the law allows?

2. How does Brian come to be on a first-name basis with Carl the janitor?

1. None of them drive themselves there. This rather argues for sophomoreness.

Plus, I was a sophomore in 1985, so, you know, they must have been.

2. Um...same way I did? By being an immense dork and talking to the janitor?

Sophomores, I think - the not-driving is the giveaway, these kids are 15 years old.

I always figured that Carl the janitor was a friend of Brian's family - bowling with his dad, maybe, or maybe going to the same church, or something like that.

1) 16. I can see Bender not dropping out because he's such a loser. He is at least a big fish in a small pond at school.

2) Brian is the biggest geek ever to walk the planet. These are the kind of kids who actually talk to the janitor (assuming they are the type of person who talks as opposed to the type of geek who is silent).

And yeah, Judd Nelson was hot in that movie, wasn't he?

Well, if you drop out, you either have to have very patient parents (which he clearly doesn't) or you have to get a job and find a place to live.

But on the other hand, he almost seems to be the kind of guy to whom details like that just haven't yet occurred. Like he'd drop out in a fit of fury and go, "Oh, shit."

And six months later, he who was the Terror of Princesses and the Nemesis of Faculty Members is now just a beginning auto mechanic who had to borrow his rental deposit from his boss.

You do? Really? Where do you live? I'm unemployed; I'll come do your job for a bit, if it doesn't require math or spatial skills.

You do? Really?

Yeah. I actually have a bunch of story ideas kicking around in my head, but I've been working 10-12 hour days since August, and sometimes weekends, too.

So I actually have about TEN MILLION story ideas for ELEVENTY BILLION FANDOMS kicking around in my head at this point. I miss having free time. I miss writing *porn*.

Where do you live?

Michigan. But it's January, and nobody wants to come here in January.

I'm unemployed; I'll come do your job for a bit, if it doesn't require math or spatial skills.

Oh, god, I wouldn't do that to you. I *like* you.

I'm coming to Michigan! In January!

Yes, I know that doesn't help, and that to see you actually requires you to drive the width of the state, but I couldn't let it pass unchallenged. I really hope things get better for you, and soon.

Emilio Estevez has a varsity jacket. I think he'd need to be a junior at least to have earned a letter (yes that is probably quite nit-picky of me, but there you have it). I was a senior in 1985 and Judd Nelson was teh HOT!

Good point. Vernon even says to him, "I expected more of a varsity letterman."

But he can't be a senior, because that would have added a lot more urgency to that whole "I can't miss a match" thing, and I'm sure they'd have used it. (Likewise Brian's grades -- if he were a senior, and applying to colleges, he'd certainly have said so in that "I can't have a B" speech.)

I suppose there's nothing that says they all have to be the same age. Bender is for sure too young to drive or drop out, or he'd have done both ... Claire probably hasn't had a sweet-sixteen or she would have gotten a car ...

Bender stays because otherwise he'd lose his audience. I think it's obvious he quite likes/needs attention, whether positive or negative :o)

I don't think Brian knows Carl because he's the type to go around talking to janitors - he's obviously embarrassed about the others seeing that they know each other. Like [livejournal.com profile] celandineb, I have always assumed they are somehow connected outside school…

It's a great movie, isn't it :o) !

You know - weird, I'd actually never really thought about it -- I just assumed they were 17ish, and in their final year of high school. But you're totally right - why *would* Bender stay a second longer than he had to. (Especially when I think that he could have stopped Vernon's 'And that's another detention and that's another detention' with a simple 'I'm outta here.') The only thing I can think of, is that maybe he has more ambition than he seems to.
