I don't know if any of y'all have noticed, but the combination of tags and subscriptions means that there's a new way of "subscribing" to someone's LJ -- instead of adding them to your Friends page, you can tell LJ to notify you when they make a post with a particular tag.

For instance, if you were interested in SGA icons but not in SGA fiction, instead of friending [livejournal.com profile] sga_noticeboard you could go to the Noticeboard info page, click the little thumbtack to go to the Manage Message Settings page, and ask to be notified when someone made an entry tagged 'icons.'

Or, if you want to read my stories but don't have time to keep up with my extremely fascinating life, you could go to my profile page, click the thumbtack, and ask to be notified when I made an entry tagged 'stories' or 'sga' or 'ds' or whatever. You'd miss nifty posts like this one, of course.

(If half the people on my friends-of list disappear today, I'm going to choose to interpret that as meaning that this post has been very influential!)

I could see that being very handy, especially with something like the noticeboard, but... I'd be wary of using it to rule out individuals since I know how rarely people seem to use their tags consistently.

True. Also, LJ doesn't offer the option of "everything that isn't tagged 'dieting' or 'my stupid mother-in-law,' " which is a setting I'd really get a lot of use out of.

I do find it useful for wips though, at the very least those are much more consistent than other tags.

I'm here for the duration, baby. I *still* chuckle at the "nutmeggins" :D If I didn't read your LJ for your daily life I would have missed out!

Most of the LJs I have friended are actually people who write with grace or humor or irony about "daily life." I find it fascinating that all the daily minutiae that we experience every day can be the subject of growth and humor :)

Well done!...

I was off to write similarly, but have decided to spare all and just point and say..."What she said!"

(although I must have missed ~nutmeggins~ sadly enough)

[hugs you too]

The nutmeggan thing was a Christmas oddity from several years ago. (http://resonant8.livejournal.com/43041.html)

I have some of the daily-life people on my flist, and I cherish them [hugs you], but I also have a fair number of communities where I skim fifty entries for every one I read.

Yes, that feature is in fact very handy!
However, as far as I know it only works if the entry is tagged while being posted, not if you edit the tags after the entry has been posted.

Oh dear! That makes perfect sense, and yet it makes the feature much less useful.

Well, other people are pointing out some serious drawbacks -- but I hope it helps anyway.

Another disadvantage of tracking is that the LJ-cuts don't get kept, which can make spoiler-avoiding difficult.

Interesting. I don't worry too much about spoilers, but I'm on dial-up, so it would be a problem for me to open an image-heavy post without having a chance to stop at the lj-cut.

Yeah, I can see how that could cause problems.
