I'm contemplating a Cynic's Version of the Psalms.

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like a freaking miracle, that's what it is like.

Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? Why indeed? Who the hell knows why those goyim do anything?

I could get into this.

Or, you know, doing a parallel set. :-)

That lime-jello-marshmallow-cottage-cheese thing is not just a midwestern thing, but a Protestant midwestern thing. (Trufax: not all midwesterners are Protestants. [g]) Even Unitarians don't put funyuns in their chocolate pudding. (I don't know what Catholics eat.) And the Jews, of course, have their own weird - erm, particular - foods.

Midwestern Jewish food, you mean like,

Noodle kugel with cornflakes on top?

Kichel and herring with schnapps?

(Why standest thou afar off, O Lord? why hidest thyself in times of trouble? Do you think we don't see you over there, or if you stay quiet and don't raise your hand maybe you won't get called on?)

See, yours are inevitably going to be more targeted, while mine will be generic, as I am not employed by a church. :-)

I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord. Because the mosquitoes are eating me alive out here.

Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands: but not between 10pm and 8am.

We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old. In fact we've heard many times, because our fathers tell the same stories every time we see them.

Judge me, O Lord; for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the Lord; therefore I shall not slide. If my teammate can execute a sacrifice bunt, I'll advance, but I'll do it standing or not at all.

Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? If they cannot agree, perhaps they should switch places after the winter break.

I'm glad! I was pleased with that one and the switching-after-break one; the others I don't hate, but I don't like them quite as much.

(Is your username pronounced "fish"?)

Yes, it is a normal kiddush lunch! When [personal profile] fox says Midwestern Jews eat weird things, she's not wrong.

Also, one doesn't burn in hell for using scriptural texts to mock communal foibles in my congregation--one saves them up for Purim.

I don't know what Catholics eat.

Fish on Fridays, wafers (you should have heard the debate at my college parish over whether it was acceptable to improve the taste of the bread used for Communion! Although I was on the side of the women doing the baking, even I thought that the transubstantiated body of Christ was never meant to be chocolate flavored, nor to have sesame seeds sprinkled on top. And yet... why not, exactly?), and wine with meals, even for the kids.

I have never seen the jello-and-white-stuff dish at a Catholic gathering, but I'm sure it must have occurred at some point.
