The spouse is studying Italian.

"Ponte vecchio," his tape says.

"Hey, wait, what does that mean? What does 'vecchio' mean?" I ask him.

" 'The old bridge,' " he says. " 'Vecchio' means 'old.' "

So maybe everybody already knew this but me, but his name was "old Ray."

Now I want to know what Kowalski means.

Vecchio is also the name of a character genre in the commedia dell'arte, which is where I always thought the name was from -- vecchio are the old men, the cuckolds, the rich but meddlesome fathers....

Right. Which means that the kid in "Dead Guy Running" - Stan Smith - and Ray Kowalski actually have the same name. *g*

Yes.

Which means that in a bizarre way, Ray Vecchio was suspected of murdering himself.

Heh. True.

(...and, of course, I mean "Stanley," not "Stan." *g*)

And the best part of it is that Ray says to the kid (when he's all, "I thought you were Ray?"), "Are you the only Stanley Smith in the world?" or something like that, which is intensely amusing, because, as you say, they have the same name.

Little touches like that make me adore dS so damn much.

I knew that about "Vecchio," but not about "Stanley Smith"! Hee!

My uninformed1 guess is "really hot."

1 The kind of uninformed where you actively avoid becoming informed, as it'd most certainly be a downer.

Yes. I actually looked up "Kowalski" in the dictionary and it says, "Very, very hot"

Uh huh. Yesiree, it most certainly did *g*

What are you talking about? Some fandom involving a Vecchio Ray? Anyway, it doesn't work for people. They are not vecchio in Italian. They're something else but I forget what at the moment.

Otoh, I could be talking through my tin hat.

P.S. Kowal in Polish means blacksmith.
