So ... tomorrow the Tech Goddess is going to come over, lend me a drive to back up my music, and then help me reformat my hard drive and install Panther.

Tonight I'm frantically backing up everything I can think of. I've located all my software CDs. I'm going to burn a CD with installers for all the software I don't have on CD. I've written down all the e-mail and internet settings I'm using.

Does anyone know ...

- if there's a way to export IE bookmarks into a text file or something? I'll be using Safari when I've upgraded the system software (yay!), but I'd hate to have to track down all those sites again.

- any way to figure out what my Internet Config password is, if I didn't write it down anywhere? I have some standard passwords that I rotate among, but this has the wrong number of characters to be any of them. I can't copy and paste it.

- anything else I ought to be writing down, or backing up, so that I won't be sorry later?

Aren't IE bookmarks saved in the Preferences? I'm still on 9.2 at work (bleah) but I think that's where I remember them. Poke around there a bit.

sorry -- in preferences as an .html file, so they could be opened/imported elsewhere.

Mac OS 9.2, not the IE version #.

One of your usual passwords might be correct, actually -- the number of *** displayed in the window doesn't necessarily correspond to the characters in the password. This is a feature to foil would-be hackers.

Oh, thanks -- that's reassuring. They did assign me some impossible-to-remember passwords when I first signed up, but I thought I had changed them all over.

I just moved all my crap tp a new laptop, so to save my favorites I just burned the whole "Favorites" file to disk. Then when I installed I c/p the whole thing to the new browser file. I'm sure there's an easier way, but this way worked for me.

Don't forget to backup your address book. It took me forever to get that info again when I formated my old computer.

You could try dropping the .url bookmarks into a Word doc, then saving the doc. It should copy them as URLs, and then you'll be able to put them back into your favorites when you reload IE. Alternatively, you can import bookmarks into Netscape, where they'll be saved as a single html file for you, then reimport them back into IE later.

Heh. I used to have shame. Then I spent five years reading and betaing NC-17 stories, with the result that I now spend my evenings in chat saying things like, "But if a guy's uncut, then he really doesn't need lubrication for a handjob." Shame all gone.

Okay, I admit it: I can't quite puzzle out why that would be the case. Would you mind explaining?

Oh, test my lack of shame, why don't you?

OK, understand that I have no direct experience of foreskin-possession, both on account of being female and on account of only having slept with guys who were circumcised. So what I know about this, I've learned from the internet.

With that in mind: It appears that when a guy is uncut, a handjob (or masturbation) basically involves moving the foreskin around, without ever touching the skin underneath. And since there's some lubrication inside the foreskin, nothing additional is needed.

If you do a Google search with both "circumcision" and "intact" in the search, you'll find lots of very, er, education sites. Many with lots of photographs.

IE has an "Import and Export..." option under the file menu. This exports your favorites to an html file. As I'm sure is obvious, you then import the file after your upgrade.

There, see? I knew someone would know the easy answer to that question.

(If anyone else wants to try this, and finds the option grayed out, you have to make sure the Favorites window is open and in front.)

I saw! Thanks so much!

If I may self-pimp for a moment, I do have a Ray/Ray story that's longer than 4K: Left. (http://trickster.org/res/left.html)
