Can anyone recommend good books or online resources on "masculinity" from a feminist perspective? -- i.e. ways of looking at the sort of ritualized, semi-humorous homophobia and misogyny that you see in young male culture?

Believe it or not, the spouse needs this for seminary; I told him I'd poll my Hip Bent Feminist Librarian peoples.

I haven't read this one, but I can tell you it's heavily assigned and circulates a lot.

(note focus is specifically on high schoolers from an ethnographic perspective.)

I was just about to rec that. It's marvelous. Disturbing as hell, but really good analysis.

Bill's Profeminist Blog writes posts that examine feminism, and our culture, from an analytical male viewpoint. He has (currently) 57 posts with the tag of "masculinity", that examine what our culture demands of "real men".

I haven't seen any posts that specifically address the 'young male' demographic (although I could certainly have missed some), but your spouse might find some good talking/writing points.

There might be something about that on the Good Men Project, maybe in their Dads or "Families section.

perhaps especially for seminary

One of my favorite titles, ever:

God's Phallus by Howard Eilberg-Schwartz.

I read it in a class called "Beyond God the Father: An Introduction to Gender and Religion." Obviously, the Mary Daly book of the same name was also on the list, which grapples with gender and religion more generally, and from a woman's perspective. God's Phallus discusses masculinity from a feminist perspective, but does so via Old Testament analysis, and focuses on the problematic male embodiment of God for the male faithful. Perhaps it will be helpful to him? I remember it being very well-written, and the cover is almost too clever for words.
