[personal profile] dorinda - Top 5 comfort movies? Or comfort reads, if you'd rather

Comfort media, then. Mostly books.

5. Lilo & Stitch.
4. Katherine Addison's The Goblin Emperor.
3. Samuel Delany's Babel-17.
2. Cyrano de Bergerac. (I'm not sure what translation I had in high school -- possibly the Louis Untermeyer one, from Dover Thrift? A while back I read the Anthony Burgess one and I liked it OK, but of course there are lines I remember vividly from that old translation that Burgess just doesn't do justice to.)
1. Terry Pratchett -- the complete works, really, but I think my most re-read is the seasonally appropriate Hogfather.

I can't currently look up what translation my copy of Cyrano is, but I like it a lot -- it does a great job with the poems, and it's metered as the original but sounds quite natural.

(I also have it in French. And I've seen it in Czech, which I speak not at all, and Spanish, which I speak a tiny bit.)

I read Hogfather about this time every few years. It's also the Pratchett book I've read the most.

Lilo and Stitch is such a good movie. As the mom of two daughters with a 10.5 year age gap, it gets me in allllll the feels.

I recently discovered that a work colleague of mine has never seen Lilo and Stitch. It's one of those situations where I feel certain she'd like it, but I don't want to try to sell her on it too strongly, because I worry about that backfiring... So I tried to do the 'oh, it's very good, I think you'd like it', but in a calm way without really letting my enormous enthusiasm pour out.

And you have reminded me that I've never actually read Cyrano myself, only seen film adaptations (or loose adaptations like 'Roxanne'). Hmm!

I haven't. I was interested when I first heard about it, because I like Peter Dinklage and find him very handsome, but I never followed through and actually tracked it down. Hearing about an "I'm Not Like The Other Girls" Roxanne, though, yikes, maybe not.
