I am very pale and pinkish, and I really really really can't be wearing warm colors next to my face unless I want to look slightly dead. (Due to the Italian heritage, the spouse and the kidlet look great in brown and melon and peach, and I'm so jealous.)

5. Black. Can't go wrong. Doesn't look as good on me as it did when my hair was dark, though.

4. The cool half of the red spectrum. My new company's color is scarlet, which is just orange enough that I had to give the T-shirt away.

3. Purple. I love every shade of it, from the wine side to the almost-navy-blue side.

2. The cool half of the green spectrum. I particularly like those shades between green and blue.

1. Current favorite: gray. Seems less dressy than black, more unassuming. Oddly, most mass-produced gray clothes seem to look pretty good together (unlike most shades of gray house paint, which is famous for going pink or green or brown when the light changes) so if I happen to get up in the morning and put on a gray shirt and later discover that the sweater I grabbed in the dark closet is also gray, it's usually fine.

heh. yeah, our kids inherited my incredibly light skin tone, but their half-Italian dad's olive undertones. if you see me apart from my oldest kid you might think we have the same coloration, but next to each other I look PINK and they look GREEN.

Yep, same here.

I used to have a co-worker who objected to me saying things like "I can't wear yellow" -- "Anyone can wear any color," she insisted, "because you can make adjustments with your makeup." And, one, you obviously haven't seen a pink Scot like this pink Scot, and, two, even when I wore makeup I was not going to have a different makeup for every color of sweater!

Gray is my favorite color for everything: to wear, for home decor, for everything. I love how many different shades gray can be, and I totally agree with you that it seems so elegant.

My wardrobe is mostly black, gray, purple and blue.

Mine too! Except add green.

I have a couple of pink shirts -- cool pinks are OK on me but I don't like them that much.

One of the kidlet's kid friends used to live in a house with a living room that was a deep ... I think the color is taupe? Like a browny gray? It was gorgeous but boy that required some decorating confidence on the part of her parents.

I don't think I have any green in my wardrobe at all. Huh. I'm not opposed to it; I just don't have any.

I like hot pink, and it looks good on me. I have a T-shirt or so in that shade.

Our walls are a cool grey in several rooms, and I love it.

I too am jealous of people who can wear melons and peaches. It's very unfair.

And olive green! Such a beautiful color, on other people!

Purple seems to be the closest to universal color for people to wear, in my limited fashion experience. No wonder Royal Purple was such a big deal.

When I was a teenager I spent about a year trying to wear aqua/teal/blue-greens of various sorts. It was a bad idea with my brown skin. I looked like a murky pond walking around.

In high school my best friend was a golden-skinned redhead, and I bought her a bright turquoise t-shirt once thinking of would look great with her hair - but it muddied her skin terribly.

She was the most beautiful human being I ever saw in person. (I'm not sure that's really a blessing for a 15-year-old girl.)

Oh, interestingly these are all my currently preferred colours (except black on top, which makes me look ill).

I had Cool Color Privilege in the '80s, when every popular color looked good on me (except that lemon yellow), but I graduated from college in 1986, so the year I needed to buy work clothes, suddenly the neutrals were mustard and brown.
