This really works just so well.

I love the gradual change of Bender/John as he figures out what he wants out of life, and the way age and MIT make Brian still a dork, but a nice grown up dork of the kind we all know and love.

I'm so glad they worked for you! It's always an open question, when you take young characters and age them up, whether they'll still be recognizable as themselves when they're done.
